What is it?

Comic in a Day is a new competition held by coLAB Arts where artistic teams of illustrators and writers work together to create a standard American size comic book of 24 pages, all within the span of 24 hours. The entrants’ comics will be read live by a group of actors at a showcase that will close the event, and adjudicated by a panel of judges from the industry and community. The winning comic book will receive a first place prize and online distribution.

Why are we doing it?

Comic books are more than entertainment. They are modern day mythology and are able to respond immediately to contemporary social issues. However, readers and creators have all acknowledged that comic book publishers can do better at projecting strong female characters and themes. This event is a platform to create and celebrate works that do.

For October - December, coLAB Arts is focusing on programs that spotlight conversations on women in society and the media, under the theme "#LikeAGirl" (You can check out the inspiration for this title here).

There is only one rule for participants. Writer/Illustrator teams have to create a story that features a strong female lead and embodies positive female themes. Illustrators will have to work by hand, which means computers and mobile devices will only be allowed for research and writing.

coLAB Arts is proud of its role in the community as a nonprofit organization, and we achieve our mission by promoting local artists while engaging the community in productive dialogue. Our organization offers different types of artistic programming, such as theater, dance, film, and literature on a monthly basis, much of which is free to the general public. All proceeds and donations from this event go to support both coLAB Arts programming as well as partner social advocacy organizations. Check out our YOU page to find out how you can be more involved.

One important aspect of our community engagement is building relationships with local businesses in the greater New Brunswick area who have a positive effect on the neighborhoods as much as other community based and political organizations.

Please consider sponsoring the event in any capacity. We will be able to promote you across all of our social media and email distribution, as well as at our summer events leading up to the November 22 showcase. We will also be able to include you on all print and graphic promotion for the Comic Book Day event.
